During a national rowing regatta competition at Victoria Lake in Germiston thunder storms became quite severe. The competition was called off due to weather condition, everyone was packing up and getting ready to leave when a 14 year old school boy & a 19 year old rowing coach were struck by lightning.
The NSRI Gauteng and Emergency services were on hand at the regatta event. They attempted CPR on the 19 year old, but eventually failed. The 14 year old was treated on the scene as well, and then taken to a local hospital in a serious, but stable state.
“Sadly, despite extensive CPR efforts, the 19-year-old male has been declared deceased. The 14-year-old is recovering in hospital.”NSRI Gauten
Family, friends and responding policemen alike grieved the boys death, a truly sad and unlucky story.
