In eThekwini on Wednesday, rolling down the streets were heavily armored, massive riot vehicles, the first of their kind to be issued to the police force of SA.
Whether it’s armored trucks or the songs of Jacob Zuma, eThekwini has no problem spending large amounts. With a price tag of an estimated R20 million, their arrival has been met with a bit of controversy. Officials responsible for moving forward with this decision were reprimanded for redirecting funds from public services.
Violence Monitor for KZN, Mary de Haas, found the purchase of the vehicles ridiculous.
What sort of riots are they talking about? It’s like apartheid. I don’t understand why the city needs casspirs. It’s the police’s job to deal with protests; that’s why they have public order police. This is absolutely ridiculous.Mary de Haas
You can see in the video here, two of the four purchased vehicles arriving on Wednesday afternoon. You can expect to see these massive vehicles patrolling the streets once proper training has been completed.
